After school, Daichi was walking home along his usual route.

Down a narrow side street, he happened to notice a familiar woman struggling beneath the weight of several paper shopping bags.

The instant he recognized her, his heart gave a hard, involuntary beat.

“Wait… that’s Hanasaki-san’s mother.”

Maiko Hanasaki—the mother of Ayaka Hanasaki, the classmate Daichi secretly admired.

Her long hair was gathered neatly behind her head, and she was dressed with quiet, understated elegance. There was refinement in everything about her, from the way she carried herself to the smallest movement of her hands.

To Daichi, she embodied his idea of the perfect grown woman.

He hesitated only briefly before hurrying toward her.

“Are you all right? Would you like me to carry some of those?”

“Oh, that would be a great help. They’re heavier than I expected.”

Maiko smiled and handed him one of the bags.

That smile sent another nervous flutter through him, but he kept himself composed, and the two of them continued down the street together.

Daichi matched his pace carefully to hers. Then, failing to notice a raised edge in the pavement, he lost his balance.

“Ah!”

Instinctively, he twisted to shield Maiko from the fall.

The bags collapsed between them. Their contents scattered across the pavement.

Then his vision went white.

Something soft struck against him, and the ground rose up to meet him.

“…Huh?”

When Daichi opened his eyes, something about his hands felt wrong.

They were smaller.

The palms were narrow, the fingers slender and delicate in a way that made them seem almost detached from his intentions—as though they belonged to a vessel that had merely been placed around him.

He looked down.

A knee-length skirt occupied the lower half of his vision.

“Wh—what the hell is this!?”

At the sound of his own startled cry, Maiko—who had been sitting beside him with one hand pressed to her head—looked up.

She stared at him.

“…Are you… me?”

The voice was Maiko’s.

But it came from Daichi’s body.

For several seconds, his mind simply refused to assemble the facts.

Then he looked at the person sitting across from him.

His own face stared back.

And behind that face was an expression that was unmistakably Maiko’s: bewildered, frightened, but deadly serious.

There was no joke here. No misunderstanding left to hide behind.

Somehow, impossibly, they had switched bodies.

“What… happened to us?”

After a hurried discussion, they decided that the safest thing to do was go to Maiko’s house.

Once they arrived, Maiko told him, “Just sit down for now,” and Daichi found himself waiting in the living room inside her body.

Meanwhile, Maiko paced through the house in Daichi’s body, smartphone in hand, searching desperately for anything that might explain their impossible displacement.

Left alone, Daichi began looking around.

There were photographs of Ayaka on the walls.

And beyond the living room was the door leading to her bedroom.

“So this is… where Ayaka lives.”

A thin current of guilt passed through him.

It was not enough to stop him.

Curiosity won.

Daichi quietly rose and peered into Ayaka’s room.

Her school uniform hung neatly from a hanger. Textbooks stood in disciplined rows across her desk.

Everything seemed orderly, intimate, real.

The private architecture of a life he had only ever observed from the outside.

“Well… since I’m already here…”

He murmured the excuse to himself and reached toward the uniform.

Several minutes later, Maiko returned to the living room in Daichi’s body.

She stopped dead.

“What are you doing!?”

Standing before her was her own body—

dressed in Ayaka’s school uniform.

Daichi, inhabiting Maiko’s body, glanced self-consciously at the hem of the skirt. Despite the awkwardness, there was unmistakable satisfaction on his borrowed face.

“Well, I… I just wanted to see what it was like.”

“See what it was like…?”

Maiko stared at him.

Then, rather than becoming angry, she let out a long, exhausted sigh.

“And what exactly were you planning to do if Ayaka came home and saw you like that?”

Daichi had no answer.

Still, as Maiko watched him standing there—so obviously embarrassed, yet equally obviously pleased—she found herself suppressing a small laugh.

“All right. Fine. But only inside the house.”

“I’m sorry… and thank you.”

The following day, with no apparent way to reverse the body swap, they were forced to continue their ordinary lives in borrowed vessels.

Daichi tried to live as Ayaka’s mother.

Maiko tried to pass as a male high-school student.

Each performed the other’s identity as carefully as possible, wearing a life that did not belong to them and hoping no one would notice the seams.

After school, at Maiko’s suggestion, they went to a café.

“We can talk properly here.”

Seated across from one another at a quiet table, they discussed what they should do next.

There were no good answers.

Only questions.

Perhaps the strain of maintaining unfamiliar bodies and unfamiliar lives had finally caught up with them. Somewhere in the middle of their conversation, exhaustion overtook them both.

They fell asleep.

When Daichi opened his eyes again, something had changed.

His hands were his own.

His proportions were familiar.

The body surrounding him no longer felt like a borrowed container.

“Wait… I’m back?”

Maiko looked down at herself, then nodded.

A faint smile touched her lips.

“Let’s keep this from Ayaka.”

She looked directly at him.

“This stays between us.”

Daichi nodded.

But there was one thing he could not erase from his mind.

The image remained with unnatural clarity:

himself inside Maiko’s body,

standing in Ayaka’s uniform,

looking into the mirror at a person who was neither wholly himself nor wholly someone else.

A beautiful counterfeit.

And, for those few stolen minutes, one that had felt disturbingly real.
