Takuya’s Dread: The Zombie Metamorphosis

Takuya stared blankly out the hospital window, enduring yet another sterile, monotonous day. He was bedridden, merely waiting to recover from surgery. Though his physical condition was steadily improving, the confinement galled him; the sheer, unvarying repetition of the hospital routine was corrosive to his mind. Television and magazines had long since lost their flavor. His sole reprieve was the scheduled arrival of Yumi, his nurse.

“Ah, Takuya-san. Looking lively again today,” Yumi said, her voice cutting through the room’s silence.

She was a young nurse who carried herself with an approachable warmth, always bringing a practiced smile into the room. Over time, Takuya had taken to trading idle, cynical banter with her just to feel a semblance of human connection.

“Lively is one thing,” Takuya drawled, his voice tinged with a dry irony. “But being caged in here is killing me. Yumi, I’d give anything to move through these corridors as freely as you do.”

It was a casual complaint, but Yumi merely let out a soft, dismissive chuckle. “Is that so? Moving freely has its perks, I suppose, but a nurse’s labor isn’t quite the holiday you think it is.”

At her words, Takuya’s expression hardened into sudden seriousness. A calculated, intrusive thought took root in his mind.

“Then… why don’t we trade? Displace our souls. Let me borrow your vessel, and maybe I can finally feel what it’s like to exist outside the perimeter of this bed.”

Yumi’s eyes widened, a flicker of amusement and disbelief crossing her features. “Don’t be absurd. Even if such an displacement were possible, it would be a disaster—a patient masquerading as staff.”

Yet, at that exact threshold, the absurd manifested.

Without warning, the room was swallowed by a blinding, incandescent light, obliterating his vision. Takuya felt a sudden, violent severance of consciousness. When the vertigo subsided, he was immediately struck by an engineered wrongness within his own mass.

“…What?”

Takuya forced his eyes open. His field of vision had shifted downward, centering on a stark white nurse’s uniform. The limbs filling the fabric were slender, possessing a delicate, feminine geometry. With a trembling hand, he traced the contours of his face. The familiar, rugged texture of his own skin was gone; beneath his fingertips lay the smooth, porcelain mask of Yumi.

“It can’t be… A total physical displacement…!”

Shock gripped him, but beneath the horror, a perverse, intoxicating thrill began to bloom. It was a beautiful counterfeit of existence. He had never imagined such a transgression of nature could occur, but now possessing this pristine vessel, he refused to squander the kinetic freedom it offered. He adjusted the constrictive fabric of the uniform, feeling the unaccustomed shift in his center of gravity, and stepped triumphantly out into the corridor.

As he walked the linoleum floors, other nurses and patients called out to “Yumi.” He offered clipped, awkward responses, deeply immersed in the visceral pleasure of unhindered mobility. Aware of the scrutinizing eyes of doctors and patients alike, he drifted between floors, exploring the hidden, utilitarian underbelly of the hospital—spaces normally veiled from a patient’s sight.

“They complain about the workload,” Takuya muttered to himself, a detached smile touching Yumi’s lips. “But to possess this mass, to move through gravity without restriction—it’s absolute liberation.”

But the euphoria was brief.

A sudden crescendo of screams and frantic, echoing footsteps shattered the sterile quiet, plunging the entire floor into sudden tension. Nurses and physicians bolted past him. Distant voices barked out emergency protocols: “An incident has occurred! Code red!”

“An incident…?” Bewildered, yet driven by a voyeuristic curiosity, Takuya attempted to move toward the commotion.

But the moment he accelerated, his internal gyroscope failed. His vision listed violently to the side; the connection between his intent and the body’s mass severed. A profound sensory overload dulled his mind, and his knees buckled, sending Yumi’s shell crashing heavily to the floor.

When consciousness returned, Takuya was pinning his face against a freezing, concrete surface. His vision was a blurred, desaturated smear, and a heavy, throbbing ache permeated his entire anatomy.

As he forced his torso upward to inspect his hands, his heart underwent a sudden, icy arrest.

The skin covering his fingers was a mottled, necrotic gray. It was devoid of vital warmth, displaying the unmistakable, putrid discoloration of decay.

“What… what is this…?”

Every movement fought against a crushing, leaden resistance. Dragging his weight toward a nearby mirror, he confronted his reflection. Staring back at him were bloodshot, milky eyes set into a collapsing, necrotic face. A zombie.

“I am… decomposing? How did the vessel rot so quickly…?”

An absolute despair, an absolution through total erasure of his humanity, began to swallow his mind. If he could only locate his original container—the male body he had discarded—perhaps he could reverse this biological horror.

Please, let my flesh still be intact, he prayed into the void.

With heavy, uncoordinated strides, his joints grinding like unlubricated gears, Takuya prowled the labyrinthine hospital, desperate to reclaim his original self.

After a grueling search, he finally found it. But the sight that greeted him shattered the remaining fragments of his sanity.

His original male body was also animated, yet entirely hollow. It was undergoing the same rapid necrosis, wandering the corridor with vacant, milky eyes—a mindless, shuffling corpse.

Takuya’s knees hit the floor, his internal identity completely unraveling.

“My body… even my own flesh…”

The vessel that once defined Takuya was now a vacant shell, stripped of ego, drifting aimlessly through the gloom. The spectacle broke him. He had not only failed to secure a way back; he had severed his connection to existence itself.

Clinging to a feral, dying hope, he lunged toward the corpse. “Give it back! Return to me!” he shrieked, but the meat offered no resonance.

As his decaying fingers reached out to touch the skin, the male corpse simply pitched forward, collapsing into a limp, motionless heap of matter. It would never move again.

Takuya crumpled over the remains, his voice a fractured, rattling whisper. “If this was the price of the displacement… I should have remained locked in my cage…”

Crushed under the immutable weight of his damnation, he ceased to fight the gravity. He dragged his failing, putrid mass into a dark alcove of the hospital, pulled his knees to his chest, and surrendered his eyes to the dark.
